For my first blog I thought it would be nice to introduce myself - my name is Elly, I’m 28 years old and the idea for Contain Yourself started in the summer of 2018.
I’d never had big dreams of running my own business, so if someone had told me a few years ago that this is what I’d be doing now, I never would have believed them! I’m naturally a shy, quiet person so the thought of putting myself out there like this was nerve wracking to begin with.
At the time there was nowhere in my local area offering refills, there were some dotted around the country (I was particularly inspired by Earth. Food. Love based in Totnes, Devon who provide an amazing free guide on setting up your own zero waste store) but it doesn’t make sense to travel miles away to refill a few bottles! It seemed like this was something every town should have access to.
I felt like I couldn’t be the only person looking for this kind of service and the more I researched the idea, the more it seemed like something I could really do. A few people mentioned to me it might be worth sticking with my office job and trying a few markets out at the weekend to gauge interest, but something inside me knew I needed to commit all my time and energy if I wanted to make it work. While the last 19 months have been full of ups, downs and learning curves, I know I made the right decision to give all my passion and attention to starting Contain Yourself!
A huge amount of time was spent researching suppliers. I knew I needed to be able to buy products in large containers to reduce plastic. It also seemed to go hand in hand that the products themselves should be eco-friendly, vegan and cruelty free. Ideally I wanted to find a completely circular system, where the containers I bought products in would be returned and refilled, however at the time I was unable to find any supplier offering this service. I plan on doing much more in depth posts about each supplier and why I choose to stock them in the future, so keep your eyes peeled if you’re interested in knowing more! In the meantime have a look at the 'Our Suppliers' page of the website, which has links to all their websites so you can check them out for yourselves!
When I’m not refilling bottles, I enjoy the simple pleasures. Spending time at home with my boyfriend and dog (some of you will have met them at markets!), reading books, sewing, drinking tea (or wine - depending on what day of the week it is!) and nice long walks.
I think I’ll wrap it up for this first blog post, but thank you if you’ve read this far! Is there anything else you’d like to read about from me? Please let me know!
