The story so far...
Contain Yourself started in the summer of 2018. Like many of us, I was moved by the devastating scenes in Blue Planet 2, which encouraged me to research ways in which I could reduce plastic in my own life.
After reading as many books as I could get my hands on, a topic which kept coming up was zero waste/ refill shops. At the time there was nothing like this in my local area and, convinced I couldn't be the only one who would like to shop this way, I decided to give it a go myself.
After encouragement from my family and friends, I knew this was something I had to do and in order to make it work I had to give it 100% so I took probably the biggest risk of my life and handed in my months notice at my stable office job - I was terrified but relied on this and my passion to drive the idea.
I started stocking up on bulk toiletries and household products (stored initially in my Mum's conservatory - thanks Mum!) and began applying to sell at various Farmers Markets around Kent & East Sussex.
From there the refill station grew quickly with demand and in February 2020 I opened the doors to my own refill shop. Little did I know one month later I'd be closing the doors again due to the first national lockdown!
It's been a tough year for Contain Yourself but I think if we can get through a global pandemic we can get through anything!
My goal when starting Contain Yourself was simple, to make shopping sustainably accessible to my local community and this remains my goal now and every day to come.
